The Buffering Baag

The Buffering Baag unfolds as a garden held in suspension - neither fully formed nor entirely paused. Borrowing from the digital condition of “buffering,” the title reflects a state of waiting, processing, and becoming, brought into dialogue with the baag, a space of growth and layered histories. Here, the garden is not complete; it is continuously in transition.

The works draw from the visual language of the chintz and palampore, where a central tree expands into a dense field of ornament. This familiar format is reinterpreted through the logic of the machine. The motif is translated into pixels - broken into units that can be mapped, repeated, and reorganised - and then into stitch maps that guide jacquard knitting.

The image does not resolve easily. Forms fragment, patterns shift, and clarity gives way to interruption. Like a screen caught mid-load, the works exist between states - part image, part system. This in-between condition becomes central, where completion is deferred and process remains visible.

Working within the constraints of jacquard knitting, particularly the use of up to six colours, introduces precision and limitation. Each colour must be carefully plotted manually within the structure of the knit, producing subtle distortions and shifts. These constraints reveal the intricacy of the medium, where technical discipline and creative interpretation intersect.

Using excess stock yarn from the factory, the works incorporate variations in texture and tone, embedding material remnants within the surface. The garden is not only grown but assembled - constructed through fragments and adjustments.

At its core, The Buffering Baag reflects a practice that resists finality. It foregrounds iteration, where image, system, and process remain in constant negotiation, and the baag continues to unfold.
